Suk Elegie for Piano Trio, Op.23
Dvořák String Quintet No.2, Op.77
Immerse yourself in an evening of joyous and uplifting chamber music from four masters of the Central and Eastern European tradition. Mozart’s sixth String Quintet was dedicated to Joseph Haydn, and features many of the dedicatee’s central European folk-inspired and rustic elements. Glinka’s Grand Sextet follows — a work whose lyrical energy laid the foundations of Russian musical identity. Josef Suk’s tender Elegie offers a brief moment of introspection whilst the evening culminates in a grand flourish with Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 2, Op. 77, a masterpiece of Bohemian warmth and vitality and uniquely scored for string quartet and double bass.
A celebration of Slavic song and soul, this programme is full to the brim with vitality, colour, and idiomatic Bohemian expression.
