The double bass is not typically deployed as a solo instrument – we are more familiar with the image of a row of bassists in the back ranks of the orchestra fervently grappling with their instruments to produce enough sound to provide support for their outnumbered higher-pitched colleagues.

In the hands of the incomparable and extraordinary virtuoso Zoran Markovic – who hails from Slovenia and is a regular at the most prestigious festivals on the European scene – and with a supporting cast of violin, viola, and cello, the instrument will be unleashed from its shackles, proving an astonishingly visceral and dynamic lower voice in versatile repertoire.
The beautiful and intimate Bardsea church is a favourite with audiences and performers alike and its resonant acoustic is the perfect setting for smaller string ensembles.
